Wandering Calendar (Tea Towel) is a souvenir in advance of a project to come. The tea towel, modeled on souvenir tea towel calendars, emerges from HaeAhn Paul Kwon Kajander’s research for a new public art commission for Kunstverein Toronto. The project explores the ways in which the intercalation of solar and lunar behaviours are manipulated in arriving at artificial units that attempt to consolidate the logical organization of time, and will further unfold as a printed calendar in late 2023 and public poster project in Toronto in 2024.
HaeAhn Paul Kwon Kajander gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council.
HaeAhn Paul Kwon Kajander is a collaborative duo working primarily with natural lacquer and sculptural installation. Through the threading together of given and family names, their practice complicates the notion of individual authorship and addresses the constructedness of identity. They have presented work at Franz Kaka (Toronto) Galerie Nicolas Robert (Toronto) Trilobite et le Pneu (Montréal), Art Sonje Centre (South Korea), Jack Barrett Gallery (New York), The Small Arms Inspection Building (Mississauga), Julius Caesar (Chicago), Nerri Baranco (Mexico City). Their work is represented by Franz Kaka.
